Gnita Heath

Description

The great heath crossed by the Rhine River within the region of Enea is remembered as the site of the battle between Fafnir, transformed into a dragon, and his adopted nephew, Sigurd, for the gold that the Ring of Andvari summoned to King Hreidmar. This ring was given to the king as compensation for the loss of his son, Óter, at the hands of Loki, and brought immense wealth that aroused in Fafnir an unusual envy and greed, leading him to kill his own father. This greed stemmed from the curse imposed by Andvari on his own ring after Loki stole it from him. Such greed would eventually consume Regin and his son, leading Sigurd to kill his own father. In the end, the treasure did not end up in anyone's hands, but sank to the bottom of the Rhine River, thus beginning the legend of the Gold of the Rhine.
